With 30 years of experience in roofing and construction, I have seen it all. Every year from March to May, hail storms strike the great State of Texas, which brings roofers from all parts of the country to Texas. Most of these storm chasers will offer everything under the sun as an incentive to get your business. Why not? This is a nation of free market enterprise, except not all roof deals are legal. Some are in fact illegal and federal crimes that could land your contractor in prison and get you in trouble with your insurance company! When roofing companies promise to “waive” or “discount” your deductible, they are in fact committing wire fraud, which is a Federal Felony. Here’s how they do it. First they tell you if you sign up with them, they will waive or discount your deductible by not doing “collateral damaged” items such as gutters, windows etc. Except, in order to “waive” or “discount” your deductible, the roofing company has to bill your insurance company for those “collateral damaged items” even though they didn’t do them. This is when it turns into wire fraud. Even if they do repair the “collateral damages”, if they don’t reduce their bill to the insurance company by the same amount they are waiving from your deductible, they are committing wire fraud. They cheat your insurance company by sending them false invoices for work they never did or deductibles they never collected. Waiving and discounting deductibles are mostly done by roofing contractors because they’re either inexperienced and don’t know any better or they don’t care to break the law just to get your business. You have to ask yourself, “Do I really want a desperate contractor on my property that doesn’t care about breaking the law?” What other crimes do you think that company is willing to do? What corners are they going to cut? Do you think they’re going to do everything for you that they told you they would? Also, from my experience, the desperate contractors are desperate for a good reason. I would stay away from them. Most insurance companies offer you low estimates to begin with, so why should you let them keep money that they owe you for your property? They often miss important line items that should have been included in your estimate. This is where a professional roofer comes in handy. Roofers that waive deductibles are not only committing crimes but also helping your insurance company short-change you.
